In this process, all manner of additives are mixed in with the natural ingredients. CBD HASH PRODUCTION – A COMPARISON OF METHOD
The production processes for CBD hash are about as varied as the end products themselves. Almost every region of the world has its own traditional methods for producing hashish. Whilst in India and Pakistan it is common to harvest the pollen for hash production directly from the plant whilst it is still fresh (and in some cases still standing in the field), for other hash varieties, such as our ‘Sahara Gold’, the plants must first be harvested and dried. The processing of traditional hashish is extremely labour-intensive and requires a great deal of effort. Broadly speaking, three types of ‘CBD hash’ can be distinguished:
CBD KIEF
Strictly speaking, kief – or CBD kief – is not yet hashish. Kief is essentially the collected pollen from the cannabis plant. CBD kief can be obtained quite simply by shaking the dried cannabis flowers. This causes the dried trichomes to fall from the flowers, where they can be collected. The end product is called kief, pollen or simply dust. When this is pressed into shape, the result is something often called hash, though it only deserves the name to a limited extent. This is because regular hash requires further processing under pressure and heat. Only then are the traditional hash varieties (such as Moroccan hash or Red Lebanese hash) produced that we are familiar with.
REGULAR CBD HASH
Regular, traditional or ‘standard’ CBD hash is essentially nothing more than processed CBD kief. There are countless methods for doing this, which vary from country to country and region to region. In all cases, however, the CBD kief is processed using friction and pressure, which alters its consistency, smell and even colour. In Morocco, the kief is traditionally wrapped in fine cloths and then processed for hours or even days by beating it with wooden sticks. The resulting pressure and temperature transform the raw material, turning it from dry kief into a malleable, solid mass. Classic Moroccan hash is hard and brittle when cold and only becomes malleable and soft again when heated. Nowadays, however, it is difficult to find truly traditional Moroccan hashish. With the arrival of new cannabis strains (particularly from the USA) in Morocco, the traditional methods of hash production have also changed. Today’s Moroccan CBD hash is softer and more malleable even when cold, but it is still undoubtedly one of the finest and most traditional hash varieties in the world.
CBD CHARAS
CBD charas also comes in many shapes and colours. However, CBD charas differs clearly from regular CBD hash in that charas is not made from kief (i.e. dried and collected trichomes) but from fresh cannabis resin. Traditionally, to produce charas, individual fresh cannabis flowers are rubbed between the hands until the still-moist resin transfers onto the hands. The hands are then rubbed together until the accumulated resin slowly separates. The CBD resin obtained in this way is particularly soft and creamy and, due to the time-consuming extraction process, is a very high-quality CBD hash product. The different types of charas are mainly attributable to the plant varieties used in production and their growing regions. Traditionally, charas is often produced in the higher altitudes of the Himalayas, as, according to legend, the plants there produce particularly high levels of resin to protect themselves against the harsh climate. CBD charas is certainly one of the finest CBD hash varieties available and is hard to beat in terms of its creamy consistency and unique flavour.
CBD WAX, CBD CRUMBLE OR CBD SHATTER
CBD wax, CBD crumble and CBD shatter are essentially all different names for the same thing: namely, CBD concentrates. In the US, these concentrates are also broadly classified as hash. However, there are fundamental differences compared to CBD hash as we know it in Europe. CBD wax is obtained by pressing a CBD flower firmly and heating it gently (60–110°C). During this process, a honey- or wax-like sap flows from the pressed flower and is collected. This ‘CBD wax’ is highly concentrated and contains cannabinoids and terpenes in much higher concentrations than in the unpressed flower. Generally, around 1 gram of CBD wax can be obtained from 10 grams of dried flowers. Consequently, genuine CBD wax is also quite expensive. However, there are also cheaper methods of obtaining the relevant concentrates. CBD crumble or CBD shatter often refers to a substance similar to CBD wax, but one that has been extracted from the CBD flowers using different extraction methods (with the aid of solvents such as butane, ethanol or CO2). This allows the desired substances to be extracted from the flower more efficiently than through pressing and heating alone. Such products are often produced or blended in a laboratory from various concentrates and extracts. A wide variety of CBD shatter or CBD crumble can thus be created from different cannabinoid extracts and synthetic terpenes. The resulting end product is considerably cheaper than genuine CBD wax.
